Based on TFT Member demand for community mahogany in Central Java, TFT began working with farmers growing mahogany in Kebumen District, Central Java Province in late 2005.

KOSTAJASA is a cooperative formed as a democratic organisation on 27th August 2007, with 52 founding members made up of farmers in Kebumen Regency committed to managing the agro-forests on their private land sustainably.  Formation of the cooperative grew out of a community forest development programme designed and facilitated by TFT.

Since 2006, Kostajasa has progressed considerably and in 2009, KOSTAJASA successfully passed the sustainable forest management certification audit under the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) scheme, making them immediately eligible to sell FSC-certified mahogany timber. The cooperative serves as a group manager for smallholder farmers growing timber to become FSC Certified under FSC group ‘SLIMF’ (Small and Low Intensity-Managed Forest) standards. As a result of the FSC Certification, cooperative members received a 17% price premium for their wood in 2009.

The cooperative now has 134 members and 126 hectares have been registered.

Updates

KOSTAJASA achieved FSC certification in June 2009.
