Rondobel is a Brazilian company with 16,000 hectares of forest. TFT has been working with Rondobel since early 2009, guiding the company to Verification of Legal Origin (VLO) standards and to FSC certification.
In October 2009, TFT organised a roadshow in Brazil, with the aim of encouraging and facilitating links between buyers and their suppliers while also sharing clarifications about EU legal and sourcing requirements. Scott Poynton, Executive Director of TFT, said: "It was a great trip. The highlight for me was visiting the Rondobel Forest near Santarém. Having seen their past logging operation, which can only be described as really bad, the dramatic difference in their forest management since TFT started working with them in June was so stark that it highlighted the real impact we can make with Sustainable Forest Management technical assistance.
Scott added: “Congratulations to our team for transforming the work on the ground but congratulations also to Rondobel's field team for their work. Given we flew for 40 minutes over swathes of deforestation to reach Rondobel, it proved to me that sustainable forest management really is possible and that it really does have an important role to play in climate change discussions".
On 20 September 2010, Rondobel, assisted by TFT through the TTAP project, became the first company to produce sawn timber whose origin was independently verified under the Rainforest Alliance's VLO standard.
After an initial FSC audit in 2011 and much work with indigenous communities living close to the forest, the full FSC audit was carried out in February 2012, and Rondobel received FSC certification in April 2012.
